Tenía muchas ganas de leer este libro y lo elegí como lectura para marzo asiático， hasta que me enteré leyendo sobre Kazuo Ishiguro que aunque nació en Nagasaki en 1954 se trasladó a vivir a Inglaterra en 1960， por lo que se le considera más autor británico que asiático。 No la puedo contar como lectura para marzo asiático 🤷🏻♀️。 𝘓𝘰𝘴 𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘰𝘴 𝘥𝘦𝘭 𝘥í𝘢 es la tercera novela de Ishiguro y fue galardonada con el Booker Price en 1989。Stevens es el mayordomo de Darlington Hall， que fue propiedad de Lord D Tenía muchas ganas de leer este libro y lo elegí como lectura para marzo asiático， hasta que me enteré leyendo sobre Kazuo Ishiguro que aunque nació en Nagasaki en 1954 se trasladó a vivir a Inglaterra en 1960， por lo que se le considera más autor británico que asiático。 No la puedo contar como lectura para marzo asiático 🤷🏻♀️。 𝘓𝘰𝘴 𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘰𝘴 𝘥𝘦𝘭 𝘥í𝘢 es la tercera novela de Ishiguro y fue galardonada con el Booker Price en 1989。Stevens es el mayordomo de Darlington Hall， que fue propiedad de Lord Darlington hasta que murió hace tres años y que pertenece ahora a un norteamericano que le ofrece su coche para que coja unas vacaciones y haga un viaje。 Stevens decide hacer ese viaje e ir a visitar a una antigua compañera de trabajo que fue ama de llaves en Darlington Hall hasta que se casó。Me ha encantado conocer a Stevens y acompañarlo en su viaje por Inglaterra descubriendo maravillosos paisajes a través de unas impresionantes descripciones 😍。 Con una atmósfera muy cuidada y palabras exquisitamente escogidas el personaje queda perfectamente caracterizado。 Ambientada en 1956， se perciben los cambios que dejó la segunda guerra Mundial en las clases adineradas。 Y a través de los recuerdos que va rememorando Stevens durante el viaje， conocemos cómo eran los tiempos al servicio de Lord Darlington， como fue el periodo entre guerras y pinceladas históricas sobre los acontecimientos que desencadenaron la Segunda Guerra Mundial。Pausada y escrita con gran sutileza， emociona， conmueve y te deja reflexionando。 Me ha encantado y la recomiendo muchísimo。 Ya estoy deseando leer más de Ishiguro 🙌🏼。Después de todo， ¿qué se gana con estar mirando siempre atrás？ ¿Con culparnos del hecho de que la vida no nos haya llevado por el camino que deseábamos？ 。。。more

Stevens is such a quirky guy。 I loved hearing his stories of being a butler while he was supposed to be on a 6 day vacation （not thinking about work）。 Ha！ Impossible！ He has literally dedicated his life to his work。 This made me quite sad。 Although he enjoyed his job and the fact that he was highly regarded in the world of servants， I felt that he was missing out on a truly magical life。 One filled with love and companionship。 Stevens overanalyzes everything。 He referred to the letters from Miss Stevens is such a quirky guy。 I loved hearing his stories of being a butler while he was supposed to be on a 6 day vacation （not thinking about work）。 Ha！ Impossible！ He has literally dedicated his life to his work。 This made me quite sad。 Although he enjoyed his job and the fact that he was highly regarded in the world of servants， I felt that he was missing out on a truly magical life。 One filled with love and companionship。 Stevens overanalyzes everything。 He referred to the letters from Miss Kenton 100 times trying to figure out her true meaning behind each one。 He overanalyzed how to properly be witty， or to banter like he has seen others do。 It made me chuckle out loud。 His unwavering loyalty irked me。 I wanted him to do something spontaneous or say his true feelings when asked many of a time his opinion。 He was constantly worried about his dignity and tact。 He refused to comfort Miss Kenton when she lost her aunt because he was worried it would interrupt her grief。 Ugh！ It wasn’t until the very end， when he was crying to that stranger on the bench-that I truly saw a bit of remorse with his past actions （or lack of）。 He missed out on what could have been the greatest love story with Miss Kenton。 And yet， he still did nothing about it， and instead analyzed his return to Darlington Hall。 Very frustrating， indeed。I love Miss Kenton’s persistence and honesty。 She was my favorite character in the book。 I felt so sad for her that she wasn’t able to achieve the true happiness she deserved and had to live a life being just merely contempt—all because of the stubbornness of one person whom she loved very dearly。 I enjoyed this book very much。 I laughed quite a few times， rolled my eyes many more， and felt a bit of sadness and empathy for what could have been。 。。。more

I liked it very much yet didn’t love it。 It was written in beautiful descriptive prose and I fell in love with the grand home。Butler Stevens is dignified， loyal and meticulous with his work and relationship to his master but sadly sees his life is largely gone and he hasn’t lived。 It’s a sad tale taking place pre WW2 （the movie was fabulous yet very grounding） The countryside descriptions were rich and atmospheric I savoured the language and the mental images。

The beginning of the story is so heavily reliant on the novelty of the narrator- his voice， his unique perspective on the world- that it is a while before we experience an event of any consequence。 In fact， I would argue that this novel really has no events of consequence。 As a character study or unreliable narrator piece， it is interesting。 But I did not find myself deeply involved in the relationship at the heart of the story。

I've now read all of Kazuo Ishiguro's novels to date except The Unconsoled， which I'm working on now （and don't have high expectations for）， and while Klara and the Sun， the first Ishiguro I read， continues to be my favorite， Remains of the day is a close second。 As I got toward the end I was thinking， similar to A Pale View of Hills and An Artist of the Floating World but less dramatic。 But the final meeting of Stevens and Miss Denton really touched me and made the book special for me in the sa I've now read all of Kazuo Ishiguro's novels to date except The Unconsoled， which I'm working on now （and don't have high expectations for）， and while Klara and the Sun， the first Ishiguro I read， continues to be my favorite， Remains of the day is a close second。 As I got toward the end I was thinking， similar to A Pale View of Hills and An Artist of the Floating World but less dramatic。 But the final meeting of Stevens and Miss Denton really touched me and made the book special for me in the same way that Klara is special。 5 stars。 。。。more

This book is a slow burner for sure and for the first half I thought I really wasn’t going to enjoy it。 Ishiguro has such a versatile writing style and adopted a very classic approach to this one which fit perfectly with the narrator’s life。 However， it was this narrative style that made it difficult to get into and a slow read to begin with。 I did love the commentary on class and duty throughout and the characters he used were a clever way of incorporating these themes。 I think this is one that This book is a slow burner for sure and for the first half I thought I really wasn’t going to enjoy it。 Ishiguro has such a versatile writing style and adopted a very classic approach to this one which fit perfectly with the narrator’s life。 However， it was this narrative style that made it difficult to get into and a slow read to begin with。 I did love the commentary on class and duty throughout and the characters he used were a clever way of incorporating these themes。 I think this is one that I would have liked to study as there’s loads there to work through but for enjoyment this wasn’t my favourite。 。。。more
